Erska L. Barnett was the 7th of 14 children born to the union of late Moses and Victoria Barnett on May 7, 1939, in Magnolia Springs, Texas. Barnett is preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
Barnett came to Oakland, California, in 1958. In 1965 he met and married Doris, and later three children blessed their union Melvin Barnett (Nicole), Linda Barnett-Thompson (John), and Angela Gensler (Ronald).
Barnett leaves behind to mourn his surviving wife, three children and nine grandchildren (Antanisha, Brittany, John, Daniel, Asia, Victoria, Darius, Daria, and Cierra), four great-grandchildren (Anayia, Isaiah, Jayden, and Micah) and also dear to his heart are Homer and Lisa Hogg and family and a host of nieces, cousins, and nephews. Barnett also leaves to mourn his surviving four loving sisters and four brothers.
Barnett was a hardworking man, and in 1963, he became a Longshoreman. Barnett was well respected by his coworkers, and many of his coworkers later became lifelong friends. Barnett was a dedicated worker, and was later promoted to a Walking Boss and retired in 2013.
Barnett loved to watch Western Movies, and one of his favorite films was Clint Eastwood’s Hang ‘Em High. Barnett loved Baseball, Football, Forty Niners (49ers) and Boxing; playing cards and dominoes also a lover of all jazz and blues. Barnett loved his family and enjoyed playing practical jokes on family and friends.
Barnett never judged, didn’t talk too much but stayed true to himself. He was also a great listener, able to keep secrets, and provided great advice. Barnett was a loving, devoted father and husband that will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
