First Sergeant Gary Esquire Styles whom we all know and loved was taken from us in this life on June 24, 2021. Gary was born September 18, 1954 in Berkeley, California to the late Mary E. Styles and the late Reverend James Esquire Styles Sr. He had many friends throughout the Bay Area who regarded him highly. He was known to some as Coach, but loved the same by all. Gary was always there when anyone needed him. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley, California. Gary moved to Marysville to join the Air Force, he was stationed at Beale AFB. Later he moved to Riverside, California where he was stationed at March Airforce Base and Castle Airforce Base. He served in the Air Force for 8 years, and got to travel and serve all over the world. While there he met Debra Daniels and they were blessed with a beautiful daughter Tasha Styles. Gary moved back to his family home to take care of his five brothers and his lovely mother in 1987 and he met his best friend, and the love of his life, Adrienne Annette Ruff. They married on January 9, 2009, and this union was blessed with two handsome sons, Romel E. Styles & Daevon J. Styles. He loved basketball and was a basketball coach for over 15 years. He made lasting impressions and guided a lot of youth. He most recently, found a love for bike riding, especially around Lake Merritt. Gary wasn’t only a father, husband, brother, and uncle, he was a friend, a coach, and father figure to so many. He lived a full life, always finding some way to help someone else out or keep busy, the type of person who would give you their last. Gary worked in telecommunications for 26 years. He worked at Alcatel USA (Kaiser Permanente Engineering) in Oakland, California for 10 years as a Communication Engineer III then on to Pac West Communications (Oakland, California) as a Central Office Manager. Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Adrienne A. Styles, brother Marlon Styles, grandfather the late Reverend James E. Styles Sr., his beloved mother Mary E. Styles, and his father-in-law Samuel Ruff. He leaves to cherish his memory, his two young sons, Romel E. Styles & Daevon J. Styles, Mother-in-law Dolores Ruff, one daughter, Tasha Styles. Four brothers, Marlo and Byron Styles, Leon Watson Jr., and Vanderville Lewis. Eight sister-in-laws, Sandra Ruff, Debra, Rosalind, Carolyn, Shante, Elnetra, Sandra Styles, and Phaedra. One brother-in-law Gilbert Vega, thirteen nephews, eighteen nieces, as well as a host of cousins, great nieces, and great nephews and a whole lot of friends.
