Betty Jean Marsh

(January 6, 1930 - August 18, 2021)

Betty Jean Marsh was born on January 6, 1930 in Sherman, Texas to the late Walter H. & Ruby Irene Milam. She was the youngest of four children. Betty attended Sherman public schools.  Upon graduation from high school, She moved to Richmond, CA to join her brother, Walter and his family. It was in Richmond that she met her husband, R. Shannon Marsh and started a family of her own.

Betty loved caring for her family & home as well as cooking and baking. She was one of the first Afro-American saleswomen at Anita’s Dress Shop in Downtown Richmond. Her hobbies included shopping, collecting antiques, and was a avid walker all of her life. Her vigorous activity of walking is what kept her strong and she had great physical and mental strength .  Later in life, she discovered joy in dancing with or without a partner. Betty loved life and laughter. She would brighten a room with her laugh and bring joy to her family. She was always sharing words of wisdom to anyone who needed and was a mother, grandmother and friend to anyone who needed one.  For this reason alone, she will be truly missed and cherished by not just her family but all who knew & loved her.

Proceeded her in death are her beloved daughter, Jacqueline Marsh, parents Walter & Irene Milam. Brothers Walter and Bill Milam. Sister Nina Faye Andrews. She is survived by her daughter Sharon (Lionel) Stockman, granddaughter Shanel Stockman, Brittany Strong and Nicole Stockman-Brown. Grandson Adam Stockman. The family tree continues with grandchildren and great grandchildren and as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A special thank you to her Nieces Lorraine, Gwen and Olivia.
