Wendell Jones was born December 11,  1943 in Schaal, Arkansas to Fezell and Verniece Jones. In 1945, the family relocated to Richmond, California. Wendell attended schools in Richmond including Stege Elementary, Granada Jr. High and Harry Ells High School. Wendell was employed at C&H Sugar before becoming a firefighter for the City of Berkeley.
